Better know a Canasmith - Jarom Taylor
Meet Jarom Taylor, the genius who keeps everything running smoothly around the farm! He’s the guy who turns problems into wins and always has a fresh idea up his sleeve. In this interview we chat with Jarom about how he keeps our operations on point, his favorite aspects of the job, the industry and how he stays motivated.
Michelle Smyth: Can you tell me a little about yourself, your background and how you got involved in the cannabis industry?
Jarom Taylor: I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors and adventures which goes hand and hand with cannabis. I love to go snowboarding, rafting, and golfing. Growing up I always really enjoyed my experiences with cannabis and 8 years ago I received a great opportunity to learn how to cultivate this amazing plant.
MS: What inspired you to become a cannabis gardener and run operations at a cannabis farm?
JT: Initially I just took the opportunity because it sounded super interesting and I’ve always had a propensity to tackle things that were new and challenging. Once my cultivation journey began, it quickly became a part of who I am. The entire process is so rewarding, but specifically just trying to always improve and tweak things through trial and error always makes each room unique and FUN!
MS: What do you think about the Cannabis industry as a whole?
JT: I think our industry is a betterment to society, it helps people in a variety of ways. It can be a great enhancement for activities or a healing product for someone who is in need.
MS: Can you share your proudest moment or achievement so far in cannabis?
JT: I think my biggest achievement has been cultivating a wonderful team of people at the farm. It’s a blessing to come to work everyday and enjoy what we do. I wouldn’t be able to do any of it without the crew of people behind the scenes doing what it takes to grow great cannabis. I can’t speak highly enough of the team.
MS: Are there any specific strains or products that you are particularly excited about?
JT: We’ve been doing a lot more pheno hunting recently which has been super exciting. The breeders are so good these days at creating awesome cultivars that are fun to play around with. Exotic Genetix and Surfr seeds are putting out some absolutely fire genetics.
MS: How does our farm contribute to the local cannabis community and culture?
JT: We are located in a small college town environment which is a little isolated from the major metropolitan areas. The culture we create locally is fun and small knit. It’s always fun to meet and talk to customers that enjoy our products.
MS: What do you hope to see for the future of cannabis, both culturally and economically?
JT: I’d like to see the small farms still thriving and putting out phenomenal cannabis. The last thing I want to see is big conglomerates taking over the industry and pushing the little guys out. I think growing at scale and maintaining good quality product is very challenging so I hope we can maintain our relevance similarly to how the smaller breweries do.
MS: What do you want people to know about Canasmith?
JT: We are a small farm and a tight knit group of people who are passionate about cannabis and being part of the community. We care profoundly about what we do and want to continue to grow and get better at every step of the process. We are so pumped for what’s coming up with new genetics and creating a new brand that every smoker can enjoy.
MS: What is your favorite way to enjoy the plant?
JT: I personally enjoy smoking the HTE live resin carts, for me it’s a great representation of the flavors and terpene profile of the cultivars. The plants are so pungent during the last few weeks of flowering and I think the carts reflect them the best.
MS: Lastly, what is your favorite stoner movie?
JT: Half baked without a doubt. Ahead of its time and still a classic I can throw on repeat and enjoy. Pineapple Express is a close second, that group of guys are so hilarious and I think they killed it.
Thanks so much to Jarom for taking the time to chat with us. Stay tuned as we connect with more folks at the farm and beyond.
