So, you’re curious about cannabis, huh? Maybe you’ve heard the buzz (pun totally intended) about its benefits, or perhaps you’re just looking for a way to unwind without raiding the snack cupboard. Whatever your reason, welcome! Starting your cannabis journey can feel a bit like stepping into the unknown, but don’t worry—I’ve got your back.

Let’s Start with the Basics: What Even *Is* Cannabis?

Cannabis is a plant that’s been around for thousands of years, and people have been using it for just as long. Whether it’s for medicinal, recreational, or spiritual purposes, cannabis has a rich history. The plant is made up of a bunch of different compounds, but the two you’ll hear about the most are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

THC is the stuff that gets you high. It’s like the life of the party, but if you’re new to cannabis, you might want to start slow with this one.

CBD is more like the chill friend who helps you relax without making you feel like you’re floating in space. It’s non-intoxicating, which means no high, but still has some great benefits.

Choosing Your Cannabis: Don’t Just Dive Into the Deep End

Think of cannabis like coffee—just as you wouldn’t chug a double espresso on your first try, you don’t want to go overboard with cannabis either. Start with something low in THC, especially if you’re new to this. You can always go up, but it’s hard to come back down once you’ve taken too much.

Options for Beginners:

CBD-Dominant Products: These have little to no THC, so you get the benefits without the high. Great for anxiety, pain relief, and just general relaxation.

Low-THC Strains: If you’re curious about feeling that classic high, go for a strain with low THC (like 5-10%) to see how it affects you.

Microdosing: This is basically the “sip” method of cannabis. Take a tiny amount and see how you feel. You can always take more, but you can’t take less!

Methods of Consumption: Find What Fits Your Style

There are as many ways to consume cannabis as there are ways to mess up a recipe. Here’s a quick rundown:

Smoking: The classic method. Quick to take effect, but maybe not the best for your lungs.

Vaping: Easier on the lungs than smoking, with a similar quick onset.

Edibles: These are fun, but be careful! They take longer to kick in (sometimes up to two hours), so don’t go snacking on another brownie when you think nothing’s happening. Start with a low dose, like 2.5-5 mg of THC, and wait it out.

Tinctures: Droplets under the tongue that work faster than edibles but are easy to dose.

Topicals: Great for localized pain or skin issues. No high here, just relief.

The Golden Rule: Start Low, Go Slow

I know, I know—everyone says this, but it’s crucial. Cannabis affects everyone differently. What might be a tiny dose for someone could be way too much for you. So, start with a low dose, wait to see how you feel, and then decide if you want to take more. Patience is key!

Listen to Your Body (and Your Mind)

Cannabis can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a bit overwhelming if you’re not careful. Pay attention to how your body and mind are reacting. If you’re feeling anxious or uncomfortable, find a quiet, comfortable place to chill out. Hydrate, have some snacks, and remember that this feeling will pass.

Set and Setting: It’s Not Just for Hippies

Where you are and who you’re with can make a huge difference in how you experience cannabis. Choose a comfortable, familiar environment, and maybe have a trusted friend around who can help you navigate the experience. No judgment here—everyone’s been a newbie at some point!

What If You Overdo It?

First off, don’t panic. You can’t overdose on cannabis in the way you can with other substances, but taking too much can definitely feel overwhelming. If you find yourself too high:

Stay calm: It’s going to be okay.  Sing a little song like “You’re just high and you’re not gonna die” :)

Hydrate: Water is your friend.

Peppercorns: Believe it or not, sniffing or chewing on black peppercorns can help ease anxiety.

Distract yourself: Watch a funny show, listen to calming music, or cuddle up with a pet.

Eat some food: Eat a healthy snack or meal and that should help you come back down.

Enjoy the Ride

Cannabis is a journey, not a destination. Everyone’s experience is different, and there’s no right or wrong way to explore it. Be kind to yourself, embrace the learning curve, and most importantly—have fun! This is your adventure, and you’re in control.
